Achievements of the Development and Research Unit of Jam Petrochemical

Production of New High Melt Index Heavy Polyethylene Grades (HDPE-HMI) HD-5035

Another strategic research and technology project pursued and completed in 1401 (2022-2023) was the “Production of New High Melt Index Heavy Polyethylene Grades (HDPE-HMI).” This project was defined and implemented based on the urgent needs of downstream industries, enabling Jam Petrochemical, as one of the largest polyolefin producers in Iran and the region, to fulfill its mission in supporting downstream industries and helping complete the production chain in the country.

Design and Manufacture of Slurry Unit Catalyst for Pipe Product Production

The goal of this project was to localize the technical knowledge for producing polyethylene catalysts for pipe-grade products at Jam Petrochemical Complex. By developing this technical expertise, in addition to cost savings in product manufacturing, significant foreign currency outflow can be prevented by eliminating dependency on external suppliers. Moreover, access to this technical knowledge allows continuous improvement in the structure and properties of catalysts used, which resolves production bottlenecks and facilitates the manufacturing process.

Localization of Carbon Black PE Type for Use in Black Pipe Product Production

One of the important projects completed in 1401 at Jam Petrochemical, led by the Research and Technology Unit, was the “Localization of Carbon Black PE Type for Use in Black Pipe Product Production.” This national project was carried out in response to supply limitations of PE type carbon black and aimed to overcome production barriers of the PE100B product, which is one of the strategic petrochemical products in the country.

Creation of Necessary Infrastructure and Foundations in Science, Technology, Research, and Development

One of Jam Petrochemical’s long-term goals is to provide a suitable platform for the advancement of science and technology in the petrochemical industry. This objective has been realized primarily through the company’s Research Unit, which has established laboratories and research workshops such as rheology, dynamics, chemical, polymerization, catalyst synthesis, polymer shaping workshops, and more. Furthermore, an appropriate environment has been created to facilitate collaboration between the industry and academic research centers. Currently, the Research and Technology Unit of Jam Petrochemical is one of the leading companies in terms of equipment and, in addition to serving internal projects within the complex, cooperates effectively with active petrochemical companies and academic institutions.

Achievements of the Engineering and Projects Unit of Jam Petrochemical

Environmental Project for Caustic Wastewater Treatment of the Olefin Unit

This environmental project is defined to reduce pollution caused by caustic wastewater to standard levels. After a two-stage tender process with qualitative evaluation, this project was initiated for the first time in Iran by a domestic company starting from 22 August 2022 (31/05/1401 in the Persian calendar).

Feasibility Study Project for Increasing Olefin Capacity

Based on the development plan objectives and achieving the nominal capacity according to the design by Technip, and considering the post-sanction conditions which allowed negotiation with technology owners, the Engineering and Projects Management negotiated with technology-owning companies in previous years. Due to lack of cooperation from the two major licensors worldwide (Technip and Linde), this management pursued the project through correspondence with many companies to avoid any delay and to possibly increase capacity. Finally, a Chinese company was selected, and the feasibility studies for this project are currently underway.

Environmental Project for Olefin Flare Modification

The main goal of this project is to make the flare operation smokeless during the startup and shutdown periods of the olefin unit, thereby eliminating air pollution and the negative impacts of the olefin unit in the region. Other objectives include reducing or eliminating damage to flare tips caused by their flames and flame oscillations. This project started in November 2021 (Aban 1400) and is currently in the execution phase.

Achievements of the Export Sales Unit
  • Sale of 370,000 tons of various polyethylene products in export markets (more than 20 countries worldwide), with 66% of sales achieving higher profit margins and earning a $23 million revenue surplus compared to the China market in 2022 (1401).
  • Export of an average of 500,000 tons of petrochemical products annually, generating an average foreign currency income of $500 million (including light and heavy polyethylene, butadiene, and butene-1).
  • Sale of over 1.3 million tons of products from the olefin, butadiene, and butene-1 units both domestically and internationally in 2022 (1401).
Achievements of the Self-Sufficiency Unit

Self-Sufficiency Unit Achievements

According to available statistics, since its establishment, the Self-Sufficiency Department has localized 3,912 items for the first time, accomplished in collaboration with 252 domestic companies.

In the year 1401 (2022-2023), the total value of orders placed amounted to 77.1 billion IRR, which is estimated to have saved approximately 3 million euros in foreign currency.

The critical and important items manufactured in 1401 are as follows:

  • Manufacturing and delivery of burners for olefin furnaces for the revamping of two furnaces
  • Manufacturing and delivery of journal bearing pads for compressors in the olefin and butadiene units
  • Manufacturing, delivery, and installation of jacket insulation for the steam traps of the complex, resulting in significant energy savings
  • Manufacturing and delivery of heat exchangers 206, 308, and 505 for the olefin unit; orders placed for manufacturing heat exchanger 3090 for the butadiene unit and heat exchanger 2024 for the HD unit
  • Manufacturing and delivery of replacement control valve FV-033 for the olefin unit
  • Manufacturing and delivery of flare tips for the complex
  • Orders placed for manufacturing TLE furnaces for the olefin unit
  • Orders placed for manufacturing IN BED HEAT EXCHANGER related to the HD unit
  • Orders placed for manufacturing decoke drum
  • Orders placed for manufacturing amine package
  • Orders placed for manufacturing a large number of parts including pumps, compressors, turbines, valves, and packaging machine components
